Inspections, compliance and special operations

Public Vehicle Investigations (PVI) unit is part of Roads and Maritime Services Compliance Operations Branch.

The PVI unit has two (2) functions:

  1. The unit is responsible for the investigation into allegations of breaches of the Passenger Transport legislation
  2. The unit also conducts compliance activities to monitor compliance with legislation, policy and standards surrounding the passenger transport industry.

  • Inspections: Compliance check of a vehicle and/or driver to identify breaches of the Regulations and ensure compliance of the Passenger Transport Legislation.

Non Compliance Notices against public passenger vehicles

Definition of terms used in the statistics:

  • Non Compliance Notices: A notice issued to the operator/driver of a vehicle advising the operator that this vehicle is defected and is required to have repairs performed as identified by the following notices:
    • Red Non Compliance Notices (NCN): Effective immediately the vehicle must not be used as a public passenger vehicle, until the defect is rectified and this NCN has been cleared.
    • Green Non Compliance Notices (NCN): The operator has a specified time to perform repairs to the vehicle as detailed on this notice.

Public Vehicle Special Operations

The Roads and Maritime Services Public Vehicle Investigations unit regularly conduct covert and overt operations in various country and metro locations and large events such as those held at Sydney Olympic Park.

Special Operations involve compliance activities targeting specific breaches of the Passenger Transport Legislation.

Note: Sanctions include Penalty Infringement Notices, Formal Cautions, and Warning Letters.

Definition of terms used in the statistics:

  • Inspections: Compliance check of a vehicle and/or driver to identify breaches of the Regulations and ensure compliance of the Passenger Transport Legislation
  • Sanctions: Penalty or legal proceedings relating to breaches of the Passenger Transport Legislation
  • Special Operations: Compliance activity targeting a specific breach of the Passenger Transport Legislation
  • Illegal PPS: Transportation of fare paying passengers by unauthorised drivers in unlicensed vehicles
  • Non Compliance Notices: A notice issued to the operator/driver of a vehicle advising the operator that this vehicle is defected and is required to have repairs performed as identified by the following notices:
    • Red Non Compliance Notices (NCN): Effective immediately the vehicle must not be used as a public passenger vehicle, until the defect is rectified and this NCN has been cleared
