Tenders invited for Nelson Bay Road

Port Stephens MP Craig Baumann has announced that Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) is now inviting tenders for the third and final stage of the Nelson Bay Road upgrade from Bobs Farm to Anna Bay.

"This is an important step towards the delivery of the NSW Coalition Government's commitment to fully upgrade the road from Cromarty Lane to Port Stephens Drive in Anna Bay," he said.

"As residents and visitors well know, this stretch of road in particular should have been widened years ago. It's the main arterial link connecting Newcastle to Williamtown and the Tomaree Peninsula and carries a huge amount of local traffic which increases in the holiday period.

"NSW Labor promised to continue the widening of Nelson Bay Road more than a decade ago, but later admitted it had no funding, no plans and no construction timetable to complete this vital project,” he said.

"This commitment ends the 16 years of neglect Port Stephens experienced under a State Labor Government and shows that the Coalition is getting on with the job and delivering for the residents of Port Stephens and NSW."

The project is being funded by the NSW Government through the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund.

The upgrade involves widening the current Nelson Bay Road and building a second two lane road from Cromarty Lane to the Port Stephens Drive roundabout at Anna Bay.

Work already completed includes formalised bus bays and pedestrian refuges.

Work is expected to start mid 2013 and be completed late 2014, weather permitting.

Tenders for the contract close at 2:30pm on 27 February 2013.
