Significant milestone met for Showground Road

Member for Castle Hill, Dominic Perrottet today announced the upgrade of Showground Road at Castle Hill was one step closer with a planning agreement now complete.

“Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), The Hills Shire Council and the developer of Castle Towers Shopping Centre QIC have been working to prepare a Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) which sets the timing for the upgrade work to be carried out,” QIC Director, Stuart Miller said.

“The agreement between QIC and RMS was submitted for consideration by the Hills Shire Council on Tuesday 14 May and endorsed by council, a major step in the upgrade planning process,” Mr Miller said.

The Hills Shire Council will now display the agreement for four weeks as part of planning requirements.

“RMS will then invite tenders to carry out detailed design and environmental assessment for the Showground Road widening as part of the planning agreement,” Member for Castle Hill, Dominic Perrottet said.

“Without wanting to put a definite timeline in place the proposal at this stage is for upgrade work to start by mid 2015 and planned to be completed as the expanded Castle Towers Shopping Centre opens.

“For long time suffering motorists and local residents, the upgrade of Showground Road will mean a safer, less congested driving experience in Castle Hill as developments in the area increase.

“This is a great win for our community here in Castle Hill. I am proud to be part of a Liberal Government which for after 16 years of neglect by the previous Labor Government is getting on with job of improving our way of life here in the The Hills District,” Mr Perrottet said.

The planned scope of the works includes:

  • Widening of Showground Road to at least four lanes between Carrington Road and Old Northern Road.
  • Modifications to the intersection of Showground Road and Old Northern Road.
  • Modifications to the intersection of Showground Road and Pennant Street.
  • A new set of traffic lights at the intersection of Showground Road, Kentwell Avenue and Cheriton Avenue.
  • A new set of traffic lights at the intersection of Showground Road and Rowallan Avenue.
  • Bus priority measures at traffic lights.
  • Left-in / left-out restrictions at the intersection of Showground Road and Britannia Road.
  • Provision of off-road cycle facilities along Showground Road.
