Traffic improvements continuing at Edgeworth

Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) has started work to install double right turn lanes at the intersection of Main and Minmi roads to improve traffic flow for motorists.

Trevor Khan Duty MLC for Cessnock said the NSW Government provided $320,000 for safety improvement work including minor road widening, resurfacing and line marking.
Motorists are advised of changed traffic conditions while work on the right turn lanes is carried out from Sunday to Fridays between 7pm and 5am.

The work is being carried out at night to reduce congestion and is expected to be completed by the end this month.

Mr Khan said the work being carried out complements other safety and traffic flow improvement work under way and completed on Main and Minmi roads.

“RMS recently installed a pedestrian crossing on the western side of the intersection and pedestrian fencing on the Main Road median between Minmi Road and Callan Street,” Mr Khan said.

“This work was completed last year to increase safety for pedestrians crossing the road at Minmi Road and Callan Street.

“The NSW Government has also provided $40,000 to relocate a school bus stop on Minmi Road into the grounds of Edgeworth Primary School to improve safety for school children on this busy road.

“The work on the bus stop project is being carried out by the Department of Education and Communities.

“In the five years to December 2012 there were 20 crashes at the intersection of Main and Minmi roads.

“These statistics alongside traffic congestion in the area during traffic peaks made these improvements a priority for RMS,” Mr Khan said.

Traffic control and reduced speed limits will be in place where needed to ensure the safety of workers, motorists and other road users.

Wet weather may change work dates and times.

Motorists are advised to plan their journey, allow extra travel time and follow all signs.
