Improvements to Fernbrook Loop Road  near Dorrigo

Motorists will soon benefit from improved safety on Fernbrook Loop Road west of Dorrigo, with rebuilding work under way.

A Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) spokesperson said the Australian Government provided $900,000 for RMS to carry out work in response to the crash history at this location.

“In the five years to January 2013 there were nine crashes on the 16.5 kilometre loop including three fatal crashes which made it a priority for upgrade,” the spokesperson said.

“The road will be reshaped to improve safety on the bends.  Some minor widening work and other safety measures will be implemented to help reduce the likelihood of crashes.

“A vehicle activated sign which alerts motorists to their speed as they travel past has been installed and is being trialled at the site.

“The improvement work is part of RMS’ commitment to improving safety on roads in the Oxley area,” the spokesperson said.

RMS advises motorists of alternating traffic conditions while the work is carried out on weekdays from 7am to 4pm.

Preliminary work has started with major building work to start later this month.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Wet weather may change times and dates.

Traffic management and reduced speed limits will be in place where needed to ensure the safety of workers, motorists and other road users.

Motorists are advised to plan their journey, allow extra travel time and follow all signs.
