Reminder to have a say on m4 off ramp improvements at Leonay

Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres MP encourages the community to provide feedback before the end of this month on proposed changes which aim to reduce congestion and improve safety for motorists exiting the M4 via the off ramps at Russell Street at Leonay.

“Motorists exiting the M4 via the Russell Street westbound off ramps are being delayed by traffic queuing to give way to southbound traffic on Russell Street,” Mr Ayres said.

“The queue can at times extend back on to the M4 creating major traffic problems and increasing the risk of high speed crashes on the motorway.

“The $246 million NSW Government pinch point program will target this intersection with a range of proposed improvements to reduce congestion and improve safety.”

The community is invited to have a say on the concept design which includes:

  • Installing traffic lights at the southbound approach to the roundabout on Russell Street from Emu Plains to improve traffic flow
  • Installing a queue detector on the M4 off ramp to activate the traffic lights to stop southbound vehicles on Russell Street and allow a free flow of vehicles from the M4 off ramp through the roundabout
  • Providing a 90 metre long left turn lane on the approach to the roundabout from the M4 westbound off ramp to reduce queuing and improve turning safety for heavy vehicles
  • Rebuilding the roundabout and right turn into Russell Street to improve safety for heavy vehicles and other road users.

RMS has carried out noise assessments for the proposed work and will ensure noise reduction measures are in place.

RMS will also replant several trees which need to be removed from the kerb next to Russell Street as part of the proposed upgrade.

The community is invited to comment in writing on the concept design by Friday 30 August to RMS Project Manager Brendon Beirne c/o PO Box 973, Parramatta CBD, NSW 2124, or email Brendon.Beirne@rms.nsw.gov.au.
