Erskine Park Link Road “Bunda” Bridge Name Acknowledges Aboriginal History

Mrs Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa officially unveiled Friday, 23 August 2013 the bronze plaque naming the 80 metre long ‘Bunda Bridge’ built across Ropes Creek as part of the recently opened $48 million Erskine Park Link Road at Eastern Creek.

The unveiling ceremony was joined by Stuart Ayres MP, the newly appointed NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Transport & Roads and Member for Penrith, representing the Minister for Roads and Ports, Penrith City Council Mayor, Clr Mark Davies and Council’s General Manager, Alan Stoneham, and representatives from Blacktown City Council, Roads and Maritime Service and their contractor, NACE Civil Engineering, who built the bridge.

“The Bunda Bridge is already benefiting the community by reducing travel times for road transport freight and reducing congestion for motorists on our local roads” Tanya Davies said.

Uncle Gordon Workman provided a “Welcome to Country” address and spoke about the origins of the name given to the bridge and the history of the area. ‘Bunda’ is derived from the Dharug language meaning ‘Apple Gum’ tree and was proposed by members of local Aboriginal community groups in recognition of a native tree which is quite common in the local area.

During investigation and construction of the road and bridge project more than 300 Aboriginal heritage artefacts were uncovered and preserved through the careful work of the project team and the local Aboriginal community.

“This is another example of the NSW Government working cooperatively with local government to improve important local infrastructure,” Stuart Ayres said.

“The Bunda Bridge over Ropes Creek marks the border between Blacktown and Penrith City councils and its aim is to improve connectivity for motorists and freight in Western Sydney and now formally recognises the indigenous history of the area. This is a significant and proud moment for our community” Clr Mark Davies said.
