Early work starts to improve O'Connell Road at Oberon

Motorists will soon benefit from safer conditions on O’Connell Road at Oberon with early work to upgrade the road starting on Monday 2 September before major work starts in October.

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole MP said the NSW Government allocated $1.75 million to upgrade a one kilometre stretch of road to improve safety for all road users.

“Early work to be carried out from next week until the end of September includes tree trimming, vegetation clearing, planting and upgrading fences,” Mr Toole said.

“Several native trees are being planted to offset the removal of vegetation which posed as roadside hazards, especially around curves. Major work including road widening, surfacing and drainage improvements will start in October and is expected to be completed early next year.”

“The work will also include the installation of new curve advisory signs. When completed, the project aims to improve safety on curves, improve drainage to reduce skidding and provide a smoother surface for motorists. A stronger road surface will be installed, designed for use by all traffic including heavy vehicles. The new surface aims to reduce ongoing maintenance costs.“

“The work is an example of Roads and Maritime Services’ commitment to improving regional roads in western NSW,” said Mr Toole.

Motorists are advised alternating traffic conditions will be in place with short delays while work is carried out from Monday 2 September on weekdays from 7am to 4pm and on Saturdays between 7am and 1pm.

Oberon Council will carry out the work on behalf of Roads and Maritime. Wet weather may change work dates and times. Traffic control and reduced speed limits will be in place during the work to ensure the safety of workers and road users.

Motorists are advised to plan their journey, allow extra travel time and follow all signs.
