Planned extension to work hours on Gerringong upgrade
Member for Kiama Gareth Ward today invited the community to have their say on plans to extend the working hours for the Princes Highway upgrade at Gerringong.
“Fulton Hogan, Roads and Maritime Services contractor delivering the Gerringong upgrade is seeking approval from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to extend existing working hours when necessary, to help progress the 7.5 kilometre upgrade between Mount Pleasant and Toolijooa Road,” Mr Ward said.
“This would allow the project team to take advantage of longer sunlight hours and dry weather working days, and reduce the impact of wet weather on the project.
“It will also help to ensure the project is completed on time.
“Existing working hours are Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm and Saturday between 8am and 1pm. Roads and Maritime wants the ability when needed, to carry out site preparation work from 6.30am on weekdays to allow work to start at 7am.
“Preparation work includes pre-work safety checks and inspections, maintenance and the movement of equipment.
“Work would also be extended to 7pm on weekdays between October and April and until 5pm on Saturday to take advantage of daylight saving, where required.
“The proposed extended working hours are not intended to be standard working hours. They would allow flexibility for work to be carried out in particular areas, as needed.
“The extension to working hours would help reduce the impacts of work on the community and ensure any time lost to poor weather would not extend the project timeline.
“Using the available light during day light saving is simply good sense.
“If approved, the extended working hours would start immediately and would continue until project completion in mid-2015, weather permitting,” Mr Ward said.
