Warners Bay intersection upgrade underway

Work has begun on one of Lake Macquarie’s most significant infrastructure upgrades at the intersection of The Esplanade and Fairfax Road, Warners Bay.

Member for Charlestown Andrew Cornwell said the NSW Government had provided $5 million for the project, which is set to benefit more than 20,000 motorists every day through improved traffic flow and safety.

“This intersection is the main gateway from western Lake Macquarie to Warners Bay and Charlestown,” Dr Cornwell said.

“The upgrade will replace the existing roundabout with traffic lights, provide two eastbound and westbound lanes on The Esplanade and two right turn lanes from Fairfax Road onto the Esplanade. As a result, traffic flow will be improved, with queuing and congestion in the afternoon and morning peak periods expected to be significantly relieved.”

Pedestrians and cyclists will benefit from the upgrade through the creation of much-needed pedestrian access to the lake foreshore, improved lighting and cycleways.

The project is part of the NSW Government commitment to delivering safe, efficient and high quality services and infrastructure to the community and businesses of NSW.

The project is expected to be completed late this year with work being carried out Monday to Friday, from 7am to 6pm, and Saturdays, from 8am to 1pm.

A temporary 40km/h speed limit will be in place when workers are on-site and short delays may be experienced. Some night work will be required to minimise the impact on traffic, with the local community being notified in advance.
