$225 million next stage of Great Western Highway to open to traffic

Final preparations are under way to open the $225 million, 3.2km upgraded section of the Great Western Highway from Woodford to Hazelbrook on Thursday 10 July.

Member for Blue Mountains Roza Sage will be joined by the Minister for Roads and Freight Duncan Gay to mark the road opening to traffic.

"This has been a challenging project and I would like to thank the community for its positive input and patience throughout," said Mrs Sage.

"Without involvement from passionate residents who care deeply about their community, we would not have reached this point. I have welcomed their input and enjoyed working with them and representing their interests to achieve a positive outcome.

"Since coming in to office the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government has delivered a record level of funding to fast track these vital upgrades on the Great Western Highway.

"Highway widening between Hazelbrook  and Woodford has been under way since 2010 with a centre median and dedicated turning lanes built to reduce crash risk, upgrade key intersections, and a pedestrian bridge and safer crossings installed.

"A shared pedestrian and cycle path has also been completed along the length of the highway to improve separation between vehicles and other road users on the highway.

"Landscaping and other improvements have also been carried out around the new pedestrian bridge in place between Winbourne Road and Burford Street connecting the railway station and Hazelbrook  shops as well as both sides of the Hazelbrook village.

"Protected turning centre bays have been installed at Clear View Parade, Park Road and Woodford Avenue as well as new full size bus bays to improve access for bus commuters and drainage improved to improve safety during wet weather.

"The two remaining stages to complete the highway between Emu Plains and Katoomba will be completed by next year.

"The $85 million stage from 400m west of Genevieve Road at Bullaburra to Tableland Road at Wentworth Falls will open this year and the $75 million section from Ridge Street at Lawson to 400m west of Genevieve Road at Bullaburra East will open late 2015," Mrs Sage said.

The NSW Government is continuing planning and early work for the $250 million Great Western Highway upgrade west between Katoomba and Lithgow.
