Southbound lanes open one day early at Gerringong
27 November 2014
Member for Kiama Gareth Ward today advised local motorists that traffic has been diverted onto the section of the new southbound lanes today as part of the $329 million Princes Highway upgrade at Gerringong.
Mr Ward said that road users can access the new southbound lanes built on the Princes Highway between Mount Pleasant and Fern Street at Gerringong a day earlier than planned due to favourable weather conditions.
“The NSW Government has progressed work to enable this section of the new highway to open as quickly as possible,” he said.
“Motorists will now be able to drive along the new southbound lanes which will improve congestion normally experienced at the southern end of the Kiama bends.“Motorists travelling south on the Princes Highway near Gerringong can travel on the new southbound lane while road users accessing Gerringong at Fern Street can exit the highway using the left lane into Fern Street.
“Motorists travelling further down the coast will continue south using the right southbound lane.
“Local road users are reminded of other traffic changes on the Princes Highway at Gerringong now the new lanes are open.
“Motorists travelling from Fern Street to Kiama can travel north along Fern Street to the Rose Valley Road bridge and use the northbound on ramp to access the highway,” Mr Ward said.
“Northbound motorists on the Princes Highway from Berry can access Gerringong at Belinda Street or use the northbound highway off ramp at Rose Valley Road and travel south on Fern Street.
“Motorists travelling from Gerringong to Berry can exit at Belinda Street, as there will be no access onto the Princes Highway at Fern Street for southbound motorists.
“Heavy vehicles travelling from Rose Valley Road to Berry will access the highway via the northbound on ramp and travel north on the Princes Highway to Weir Street at Kiama for southbound access.
“Heavy vehicle operators will need to allow additional travel time, with this traffic arrangement in place until mid-next year.
“Light vehicles travelling from Rose Valley Road to Berry will use the Rose Valley Road bridge to access Fern Street, travel through Gerringong and access the highway at Belinda Street.
“Work will continue to be carried out on the new Omega Bridge and the remainder of the southbound lanes,” Mr Ward said.
The Princes Highway upgrade at Gerringong is expected to be completed mid-2015.
