Free community day to focus on boating safety on eve of new boating season

22 September 2015

Chris Gulaptis, Parliamentary Secretary for the North Coast is encouraging people who are interested in learning more about safe boating in the local area to visit Fawcett Park at Ballina on Sunday, 27 September to attend a free family friendly event.

Mr Gulaptis said Roads and Maritime Services would host Boating Safety Day (BSD) to promote safe and responsible boating, as part of the North Coast Fishing Bonanza.

“There will be the opportunity to have one-on-one discussions with key on-water and support staff who are experts in boating safety.

Other government and non-government marine safety organisations, industry and community groups will also attend with displays, information and equipment demonstrations.

“The community is encouraged to attend any time between 9am and 1pm with boating safety equipment talks, demonstrations of marine flares, fire extinguishers, correct lifejacket wear and maintenance and a sausage sizzle.

A key component of the education displays will be to break down the perception that all lifejackets are big, bulky and uncomfortable by showcasing modern, functional, slim designed lifejackets that can be worn in comfort for the duration of a typical day out in a boat.

"We’re heading into peak boating season and our focus will continue to be the promotion of safe and responsible boating habits to the almost two million people who go boating in NSW each year,” Mr Gulaptis said.

“In the past decade, nine out of the 10 people who drowned while boating, were not wearing a lifejacket, which is alarming.

“Lifejackets can save lives when they are worn. New generation lifejackets will be on display and there will be demonstrations of their use, service and maintenance at the boating community day.” Mr Gulaptis said.

There will be prizes on offer including a family pack of lifejackets and a waterproof VHF marine radio.

The water safety partners at the local events include DPI Fisheries, Marine Rescue NSW, Police Marine Area Command, Westpac Rescue helicopter and Surf Life Saving NSW.
