Road closures to improve safety and efficiency for motorists and road workers
29 October 2015
Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra and South Coast, and Member for Kiama Gareth Ward has today advised local motorists across the region to prepare for a number of road closures in the Illawarra between early November and mid-December for essential maintenance work to be carried out.
Mr Ward said Roads and Maritime Services has opted to close roads so work can be completed both safety and efficiently.
“Maintaining our region’s roads is essential to ensure they remain safe for all road users,” he said.
“Carrying out work while roads are closed improves safety for workers and motorists and allows more work to be completed in a shorter amount of time.
“In 2013, there were 521 crashes involving motorists at road work sites, 209 of which were injury crashes with eight involving at least one fatality.
“These statistics prove why removing traffic from work sites creates a safer environment, while also providing a higher standard of maintenance.
“Work carried out during road closures includes vegetation management, repairing road surfaces, fixing signs, repairing and replacing safety barriers, new line marking, clearing and repairing drains, litter collection, and graffiti removal.
“Maintenance can also be carried out on bridges and investigations can be carried out to inform future maintenance needs,” Mr Ward said.
“From this weekend, motorists are reminded Memorial Drive will be closed between 8pm and 4am from Sunday 1 November to Thursday 5 November, weather permitting.
“This road will be closed between the Princes Highway at North Wollongong and the Princes Highway at Bulli with detours adding around 10 minutes to journeys,” he said.
Further closures include:
- Northbound night closures on the Princes Motorway at Bulli Tops from 8th to 12th November;
- Night closures on the Princes Motorway between Waterfall and Bulli Tops from 15th to19th November;
- Night closures on the Princes Motorway between Dapto and Masters Road from 22nd to 26th November;
- Day closures on Bulli Pass on 9th and 10th December; and
- A night closure of the Princes Motorway at Mount Ousley and Picton Road on 13th December.
More information including times and detours is available on the project webpage.
“Local motorists across the region are certainly thanked for their patience whilst this important maintenance work is being carried out,” Mr Ward concluded.
