Wanna Wanna Road upgrade at Queanbeyan to start soon
1 February 2016
Work to make safe Queanbeyan’s Wanna Wanna Road is expected to start mid-year, the Member for Monaro John Barilaro said today.
The NSW Government is providing $2 million to seal the remaining three kilometre section of Wanna Wanna Road making the road safer for motorists.
“Residents have been concerned for their safety along this busy stretch of unsealed road for some time now,” said Mr Barilaro.
“This funding will go towards sealing the remaining three kilometre section of Wanna Wanna Road in Queanbeyan’s south-east and link the existing section of sealed road with Brindabella Place in Palerang Shire.
“The project aims to provide a safer road surface for local residents as well as emergency services accessing local fire trails.”
Today Mr Barilaro joined Queanbeyan Mayor, Cr Tim Overall to inspect the site where the road works will take place.
“Council has been working closely with residents along Wanna Wanna Rd and the NSW Government on this project and the confirmation of this funding is very welcomed,” said Cr Overall.
"Council had committed $300,000 over two financial years towards these upgrades and has included a further $600,000 in its Long Term Financial Plan for the works.
"The upgrades will significantly increase safety in the area and provide residents and visitors with a much more pleasant driving experience."
NSW Government funds are being provided through the Rural and Regional Roads Fund which helps regional councils deliver vital road improvements in their area.
“This is a fantastic example of how the NSW Government is partnering with councils to improve road networks and better connect regional communities,” said Mr Barilaro.
“I congratulate Queanbeyan Council who worked closely with both the NSW Governments to successfully secure funding through this initiative.”
Work will be delivered by Queanbeyan City Council and also involve realignment and drainage improvements. The detailed design of the road is almost complete with construction due to start mid-2016.
