Work starts on $2.5 million maintenance project to strengthen Tom Ugly's Bridge

3 MAY 2016

Member for Miranda Eleni Petinos MP together with Member for Oatley Mark Coure MP today announced work would start from Monday 9 May on a $2.5 million project to strengthen Tom Ugly’s Bridge on the Princes Highway.

“The bridge officially opened to traffic in 1929 and remains a key link between the Sutherland Shire and Sydney metropolitan area, crossing the Georges River between Sylvania and Blakehurst,” Ms Petinos said.

The bridge includes six main truss spans and three approach spans which form the 500 metre long structure.

A new structure was built in 1987 and essential maintenance work will be carried out on both bridges to help protect them from rust and corrosion.

Concrete repairs will also be carried out.

“This is expected to take 10 months to complete, weather permitting, with work hours from 6am to 6pm on weekdays and 8am to1pm on Saturdays,” Mr Coure said.

The site compound will be in the Tom Ugly’s Bridge Marina car park underneath the southern end of the bridge, with about seven parking spaces unavailable during work.

“The working area will be underneath the bridges and to ensure the safety of road users and workers there will be some lane closures outside peak travel times,” Ms Petinos said.

Motorists should keep to reduced speed limits and follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs.

Notification of changes to vehicle, pedestrian, cyclist and maritime access will be given in advance.
