Macquarie Pass to close for essential maintenance work
4 July 2016
Member for Kiama Gareth Ward has today advised local motorists of changed traffic conditions on the Illawarra Highway at Macquarie Pass later this month for essential maintenance work to be carried out.
Mr Ward said that the work includes urgent repairs after a section of road was damaged by a landslip during storms in early June.
“The road will be closed in both directions from 6am on Monday 11th July to 5pm on Friday 15th July, weather permitting, to allow heavy machinery on site and crews to work across the width of the road,” he said.
“Alternating traffic conditions have been in place since the road was damaged to allow inspections to be carried out and designs to be completed.
“Repairs to the road include stabilising the landslip and repairing and rebuilding the road surface.
“Light vehicles will be detoured via Jamberoo Mountain Road and should allow an extra 10 minutes travel time.
“Heavy vehicles will be detoured via the Hume Highway, Picton Road and the M1 Princes Motorway and should allow an additional 30 minutes travel time.
“Motorists are advised a further closure may be required in August or September 2016 to repair another section of Macquarie Pass where a second landslip also occurred during the June storms,” Mr Ward concluded.
