Major work starts to improve safety at Durras Drive and Princes Highway intersection
21 July 2016
Member for Bega Andrew Constance has announced major building work will start next week to improve motorists’ safety by upgrading the Princes Highway and Durras Drive intersection at Benandarah.
Mr Constance said the NSW Government allocated $2.5 million towards an upgrade at the intersection after the community campaigned for improvements and Roads and Maritime Services carried out a safety investigation last year.
“Early work started last month to prepare the site with power pole relocation and utility adjustments due to be completed this week,” Mr Constance said.
Mr Constance said he was pleased the major work will start on Monday 25 July to build the left turn deceleration lane, this will improve motorists’ safety by providing a clear distinction between southbound through traffic and turning traffic and will be a welcomed upgrade to the Princes Highway.
“The road shoulders will also be widened, sight distances improved and guardrails installed on the side of the road, further improving safety.”
Work will be carried out on weekdays between 7am and 6pm and Saturdays between 8am and 1pm until late December, weather permitting.
Some lane closures and a reduced 40 km/h speed limit will be required for the safety of workers and motorists during work hours and motorists should allow additional travel time.
“Durras Drive remains the main access route into South Durras, a coastal village where the population increases significantly in summer,” Mr Constance said.
“Plans have also been developed to ensure Christmas and New Year holiday traffic is not affected if the upgrade can’t be completed by late December.
“I thank the community for its patience as work progresses and further advice will be supplied if any work is required outside standard working hours,” Mr Constance said.
