Newell Highway upgrade speeds up south of Boggabilla

Thursday, 11 May 2017

PLANNING is progressing for a major upgrade of a 28-kilometre section of the Newell Highway, between Mungle Back Creek and Boggabilla, with the submissions report now online.

This report collates responses to the earlier submission period – helping government deliver this major infrastructure upgrade with minimal disruption to community or environment.

Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall said the move to a new and wider road pavement was picking up pace.

“With this report complete, I hope to see construction begin soon for this important upgrade,” Mr Marshall said.

“28km of road pavement will be upgraded, to ensure it continues to meet the growing demand for freight along the Newell Highway. It will be better able to deal with floods, improve safety for road users and reduce travel times from Boggabilla to Moree.”

Australian and NSW governments allocated $100 million for the upgrade to improve safety and freight efficiency. The project is an essential part of the NSW Government’s $500 million Newell Highway upgrade program.

“As well as new road pavement, the project will include 3.5 metre wide lanes in each direction, intersection improvements, widening of road shoulders and provision of two new overtaking lanes,” Mr Marshall said.

“I thank the community for their interest in the REF period, with four submissions sent in before it closed on March 28.”

Mr Marshall said key issues raised and responded to in the report included property access intersections, road building material supply, concerns with the condition of the road surface outside of the project area and water licensing requirements.

“All submissions received were carefully considered and no additional environmental assessments are required as the proposal meets the projects objectives while minimising and mitigating environmental impacts and community issues,” Mr Marshall said.
