23 May 2017
Michael Johnsen MP, Member for Upper Hunter is advising motorists that Roads and Maritime Services will start safety improvement work on Monday 29 May at the intersection of the New England Highway and Newington Lane at Whittingham.
Mr Johnsen said the NSW Government has allocated $455,000 this financial year to widen the highway to provide a right turn lane into Newington Lane.
“The project aims to reduce the risk of crashes for vehicles turning into Newington Lane and motorists will no longer have to stop and wait in the through lane of the highway,” Mr Johnsen said.
“Work involves road widening to allow for the new right turn lane and line marking improvements.
“Upgrade work will start on Monday 29 May and be carried our during the week between 7am and 6pm for up to six weeks, weather permitting. Some night work will be required Sunday to Friday between 7pm and 6am.”
For the safety of all road users, changed traffic conditions will be in place during the work including lane closures and a reduced speed limit.
Motorists are advised to follow the direction of traffic control, signs and keep to the reduced speed limits.
“Once again, Roads and Maritime thanks our local community for its patience while work is carried out,” Mr Johnsen concluded.
