Contract awarded for Nelligen Bridge detailed design

The Nelligen Bridge project is closer to reality with the announcement today of the successful contractor to design the bridge.

Member for Bega Andrew Constance said that Cardno (NSW/ACT) Pty Ltd will design the 325 metre long bridge north of the existing Kings Highway Bridge on the Clyde River at Nelligen.

Mr Constance described the award of tender as an important day and a win for the local community.

“The bridge will have a 100-year life span and will provide a safe and reliable crossing of the Clyde River at Nelligen and improved urban design around its foreshore,” Mr Constance said.

“The existing bridge built in 1964 was revealed to be deteriorating in underwater inspections carried out by Roads and Maritime Services.

“That’s why it’s so important this new bridge is built for the safety of motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

“The Kings Highway approaches to the bridge will be upgraded on both sides of the river and more room will be provided for boat parking.”

Work on the bridge is scheduled to start in 2019 with the project expected to be open to traffic in 2020, after which the old bridge will be removed.
