Final section of work commences to seal the Silver City Highway at Barons Creek

8 November 2017

Work is under way to provide a new sealed section on one of the most weather prone areas of the Silver City Highway at Barons Creek.

Member for Barwon, Kevin Humphries said the NSW Government is providing $30 million in funding for the upgrade of the Silver City Highway through the Restart NSW, Western NSW Freight Productivity Program and state maintenance funding.

“This work is part of Roads and Maritime Services’ $60 million, four year program of work to further seal and upgrade the Cobb and Silver City Highways to improve freight access and safety for motorists,” Kevin Humphries said.

“Completing this work to provide a new 1.2 kilometre section of sealed road, on a new alignment to the existing dirt road, will ultimately connect the two previously sealed sections at Barons Creek – 181 kms north of Broken Hill - which has been progressively carried out since 2016.

“This new alignment will also improve driver safety by adjusting a sub-standard curve north of the causeway at Barons Creek.

“Local labour and plant hire will be used during this work which will provide a safer and more weather resilient surface for all road users.

“Work started this month and is being carried out on weekdays between 7am and 4pm, weather permitting, and is due for completion by December this year.

“As work is being carried out away from the existing road it will not impact passing motorists,” Kevin Humphries said.

Other projects recently completed on the Silver City and Cobb highways include:

  • sealing a 13 kilometre section of the Silver City Highway, 70 kilometres north of Broken Hill
