Planning approval for Empire Bay Drive roundabout

25 May 2018

Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch today announced the Review of Environment Factors (REF) has been approved for the Empire Bay Drive, The Scenic Road and Cochrone Street roundabout intersection upgrade.

“Today’s release of the REF means that this project has official planning approval to proceed to the construction phase,” Mr Crouch said.

“During the public display of the REF and concept design in March and April, a total of 29 submissions were received from local residents.”

“This feedback has been carefully considered and has played an important role in guiding the final design outcome,” Mr Crouch said.

The now-completed community consultation resulted in four changes made to the original concept
design, including:

  • relocating the stop line at Bridge Street closer to Empire Bay Drive to improve sight distance for
    motorists exiting Bridge Street,
  • adding keep clear signs to improve left and right turn movements out of Kerta Road,
  • improving advanced warning signs to inform motorists of the pedestrian refuge near Kerta
    Road, and
  • new line markings to divert motorists away from driveways along The Scenic Road and
    formalise areas for on-street parking.

Mr Crouch said project notification signs at the intersection have been installed today, with field investigations commencing over the next week.

“Project signs have been installed at the roundabout, and investigation works will take place from Monday 28 May onwards,” Mr Crouch said.

“The NSW Government remains absolutely committed to upgrading this vital intersection to reduce congestion and improve safety for the 25,000 road users who travel through it every single day.”

Upgrade work including new footpaths, drainage and pedestrian activated traffic lights is expected to start mid this year. Roads and Maritime will continue to work with key stakeholders and the community as the project progresses.
