New milestone reached on North Wollongong Interchange
20 July 2018
Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward MP has today announced that a significant milestone has been reached in the upgrade of the North Wollongong Interchange with traffic moving onto the new road alignment.
The NSW Government allocated $6.73 million to the upgrade to improve traffic efficiency and road user safety.
Mr Ward said that the upgrade included widening the existing ramp from three to four lanes and reconfiguring the intersection to allow dual right and left turns onto the Princes Highway from Memorial Drive.
“This project will reduce delays and improve road user safety at the busy interchange,” he said. “To allow further work on the median island and traffic lights, one of the two right turn lanes will be closed until the project is complete. The two left turn lanes will remain open.
“Work on the upgrade will continue on weekdays between 7am and 5pm, weather permitting.
“Some night work will be required and the community will be updated about traffic impacts in advance.
“The project is expected to be completed by October 2018.
“For the safety of motorists and workers, traffic control and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place. Pedestrian access across the intersection will also be restricted.
“Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the direction of signs. I thank local motorists for their patience during this time,” Mr Ward said.
