Contract awarded for fast tracked Schofields Road upgrade

Minister for Roads and Freight Duncan Gay today announced a major NSW Government project to upgrade Schofields Road in Sydney’s north west is being fast tracked with the contract for stage two awarded to OHL YORK Joint Venture.

Mr Gay was joined for the announcement by Member for Riverstone Kevin Conolly and Member for Hawkesbury and Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Roads Ray Williams.

“We have fast tracked stage two building work to start in August through a $135 million commitment which includes $70 million from the Housing Acceleration Fund,” Mr Gay said.

“The NSW Government is progressively upgrading Schofields Road to four lanes between Windsor and Richmond roads.

“The awarding of this contract today to build the 3.6km stage two section of the upgrade between Tallawong and Veron roads now means work can start in August on the next stage of this important project for Sydney’s north west.

“This announcement comes just weeks before Stage one work is due to be completed.”

Mr Conolly said the upgrade aimed to improve travel for all road users between the Rouse Hill and Marsden Park town centres, Schofields railway station and future North West Rail Link stations. “Stage two includes new traffic lights at the intersections of Hambledon, Boundary, Junction and Veron roads as well as at Railway Terrace,” Mr Conolly said.

“Safety for pedestrians and cyclists will also be improved with a shared path and new street lighting to be installed.

“Travel on public transport will be improved with bus priority measures installed to improve peak hour travel and new bus bays built enable safer travel.

“The upgraded road will pass under the Richmond railway line near Schofields station and connect to Veron Road. “Stage two work is expected to be completed by early 2017 with enough road corridor allocated along the whole upgrade to allow for the road to be widened to six lanes in the future.”

Mr Williams said the NSW Government had provided $500,000 this financial year to continue planning the final stage.

“Detailed design work is now taking place for the third and final 2.5 km stage from Veron Road down South Street to Richmond Road,” Mr Williams said.

“The final section of work will include an extension of Schofields Road from Veron Road, across Eastern Creek to Carnarvon Road.

“Roads and Maritime will continue to work closely with residents as the upgrade progresses.” More information about the project, including a submissions report responding to community feedback during the display of the stage three Review of Environmental Factors and concept design in November last year is available at
