NSW Government to deliver Arncliffe pedestrian underpass
23 September 2014
Minister for Roads and Freight Duncan Gay and Member for Rockdale John Flowers today announced the NSW Government would build a pedestrian underpass near the Allen Street Bridge at Arncliffe.
“The community has waited too long for this and that’s why the NSW Government has taken the project and the funding off Rockdale City Council and we will deliver it,” Minister Gay said.
“We will build a pedestrian underpass linking Arncliffe Street to Wollongong Road, providing safe access for pedestrians to cross under the rail corridor, close to car parking and the surrounding shops and residential area.”
Mr Flowers said he was proud the NSW Government was able to deliver this vital piece of infrastructure for the Arncliffe community.
“Some of Arncliffe’s busiest roads are located in this area. The pedestrian underpass will improve access and pedestrian safety for transport customers, local residents and the students of Al Zahra College,” Mr Flowers said.
“The underpass will meet the relevant lighting and safety standards and the use of landscaping and seating are being considered.”
“The underpass needs to be located immediately to the north of the Allen Street bridge, with technical investigations to commence immediately.
“These investigations will also confirm the pedestrian path connections and road crossings that may be required.”
Minister Gay said today’s announcement followed a commitment earlier this year to carry out a major upgrade of Arncliffe Station, including lifts and improvements to transport interchange facilities.
“With the State Government now the responsible planning authority for the project, work on the underpass is expected to start early next year,” Minister Gay said.
