From Gravel to Bitumen: Safety upgrades on Mount Lindesay road completed

12 February 2016

Minister for Roads and Freight Duncan Gay and Member for Lismore Thomas George today announced 11.3 kilometres of safety upgrades on Mount Lindesay Road between Legume and Woodenbong are now completed.

Minister Gay said the NSW Government committed $2.88 million to the $4 million project which will improve road safety for local motorists and freight companies, who use this road daily.

“This project was absolutely necessary for the safety of our communities in Tenterfield and Kyogle,” Mr Gay said.

“Mount Lindesay Road is used by more than 400 vehicles daily including residents as well as tourists and freight companies visiting and servicing the local town centres such as Liston, Legume and Koreelah.

“Motorists will benefit from the replacement of the old gravel road to bitumen, widening of the narrow, windy road to better separate oncoming traffic and removal of vegetation to improve line of sight particularly at corners.”

Mr George said this investment provided a wonderful opportunity to partner with Tenterfield Shire Council to deliver much needed upgrades to Mount Lindesay Road.

“Local motorists are already reaping in the benefits of having wider and stronger road sections, which include new line markings to help better separate lanes of traffic,’ Mr Thomas said.

“Not only did this upgrade benefit motorists but around 20 local jobs were created from contracting a local business, MJ Smith Contractor.

"The upgrade is already delivering local benefits - we know there has been an increase in the number of visitors to the area and boosting the local economy.”

The NSW Government and Tenterfield Shire Council took part in a safety review of Mount Lindesay Road last year to identify the required safety improvements.

Tenterfield Shire Council contributed $1.35 million to the project.
