Cumberland Highway intersections providing traffic relief
23 September 2016
Road improvements being rolled out in western Sydney under the Australian Government’s $200 million Local Roads Package continue to alleviate traffic congestion with three key intersection upgrades on the Cumberland Highway now open to traffic.
Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher said the Cumberland Highway intersection upgrades are part of the Australian Government’s investment in urban infrastructure to ensure the right connections are in place to support the Western Sydney Airport when it opens in the mid-2020s.
“Motorists are now benefiting from $5.4 million of intersection upgrades along the Cumberland Highway at Hamilton Road, St Johns Road and John Street,” Mr Fletcher said.
“These upgrades have significantly improved traffic flow for motorists travelling in and around Cabramatta, Canley Heights and Fairfield West.
“As part of this project, we have installed right-turn bays on John Street, St Johns Road and Hamilton Road as well as right-turn bays on the Cumberland Highway to reduce queuing at these intersections.
“The Cumberland Highway is just one of many roads we are upgrading to improve road safety and travel times and ensure better connections to the broader road network in western Sydney.”
New South Wales Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Duncan Gay said the Local Roads Package was a key part of the jointly funded $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan.
“This investment will deliver better roads for western Sydney, recognised as one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions, with an extra one million people expected to be living there by 2031,” Mr Gay said.
“The Australian and New South Wales governments are working with local councils to ensure western Sydney has the road infrastructure it needs to drive economic growth and jobs and to support thriving local communities.”
