M5 East resurfacing on track for completion in March
15 February 2012
Motorists are advised resurfacing of the M5 East will continue next month with overnight closures scheduled to reduce the impact of the work.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the project was on track to be completed by the end of March.
“While wet weather has hampered some of the work, resurfacing of the M5 East has been completed on the King Georges Road ramps and Bexley Road off ramp, and is well advanced inside the main tunnel and along several lengths of the freeway.”
“This is the first time the freeway has been completely resurfaced since its opening in 2001, so this is major work.
“The $10 million project involves resurfacing the entire freeway and all on and off ramps with open-grade asphalt which will provide a smoother, quieter ride for motorists.”
The M5 East freeway will be closed overnight on the following dates to complete resurfacing, weather permitting:
- Sunday 26 February to Wednesday 29 February
- Sunday 11 March to Thursday 15 March
- Sunday 25 March to Thursday 29 March
Work starts from 9.30pm each night with the freeway reopening by 5am each morning.
Routine maintenance has been scheduled during these times to reduce the impact on motorists.
During the closures motorists can use the signposted D5 route which operates between King Georges Road, Beverly Hills and General Holmes Drive, Mascot.
