Lifejacket focus on Lake Mulwala this weekend

30 November 2012

Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) boating safety officers (BSO) will be out in force on Lake Mulwala this weekend assisting with the safe staging of the Cod Classic.

RMS Maritime Operations Acting General Manager Trevor Williams said safety on the water would be paramount with 1400 vessels registered to participate in the fishing competition.

“BSO will be randomly checking boaters to ensure they are wearing or carrying sufficient lifejackets for everyone on board,” Mr Williams said.

“The legislation changed in 2010 but still there seems to be some confusion about lifejacket requirements.

“BSO will be conducting random checks of safety equipment during the fishing competition and will have zero tolerance to those who are not wearing a lifejacket if required.

“The message is simple, check the RMS website or go to to check when lifejackets need to be worn – or face an on-the-spot fine.

“Skippers should also ensure all lifejackets on board are serviced regularly according to manufacturer’s specifications,” Mr Williams said.
