Standardised time proposal for bridge closures over Murray River
21 December 2012
Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) is proposing to regulate the bridge lift times of bridges over the Murray River at Swan Hill, Barham, Nyah, Gonns Crossing and Tooleybuc.
RMS is proposing to regulate the lift times to reduce disruption to road traffic and to provide a more consistent schedule to allow motorists and river traffic to better plan their trips.
“These are all lift-span bridges which can be opened to allow river traffic to pass under,” an RMS spokeperson said.
“This usually requires a road closure of about 30 minutes while the span is lifted, the river traffic passes through and the bridge is lowered again.
“From Monday until February, RMS will trial lift times from 9.30am to 10am and from 2.30pm to 3pm on weekdays at all five bridges.
“No bridge lifts are planned for weekends or public holidays.
“Temporary signs will be in place at each of the bridges advising these times,” the spokesperson said.
“Early next year, RMS will consult with communities and stakeholders to determine the best opening schedules, notification options and signs.
“Feedback from the trial will be used in the public consultation,” the spokesperson said.
River commuters who wish to book an opening at any of these bridges should contact Wakool Shire Council on (03) 5887 5007. Bookings should be made 24 hours in advance.
If there are no bookings, the bridge will not be opened.
This arrangement will be in place until March 2013.
