Olympic Drive to close In Lidcombe for bridge replacement
Motorists and public transport passengers are urged to plan ahead as Olympic Drive will be closed for six days in December, to allow for the replacement of the railway bridge in Lidcombe.
“The replacement is taking place to improve the safety and reliability of the bridge, and to increase the height clearance from 4.5 metres to 5.3 metres,” a Transport Management Spokesperson said.
As a result, Olympic Drive will be closed between Boorea Street and Vaughan Street in Lidcombe from 1am Thursday 26 December up until 10am Tuesday 31 December.
Additionally, no trains will be able to operate on the railway bridge while it is replaced, affecting the T1 North Shore, Northern & Western, T2 Airport, Inner West & South, T6 Carlingford, and Blue Mountains lines.
Parts of Church Street and Bridge Street will also be closed. “During the closures, local diversions will be in place for light and heavy vehicles, so motorists should avoid the area and use Centenary Drive instead,” the spokesperson said.
Northbound light vehicles will be diverted off Olympic Drive at Vaughan Street via Park Road, Queen Street, Alice Street, The Crescent, and then on to Rawson Street.
Northbound heavy vehicles will be diverted at Muir Road, on to the Hume Highway and then on to Centenary Drive.
Southbound light vehicles will be diverted at Boorea Street to John Street, Maud Street, Swete Street, Church Street, Railway Street, East Street, and then on to Georges Avenue.
Southbound heavy vehicles will be diverted via Boorea Street, on to John Street, and then back to Parramatta Road.
“During the closure traffic is expected to be heavy in the area, in particular on Parramatta Road, Joseph Street and Rookwood Road,” the spokesperson said.
“Motorists are advised to expect significant delays and allow plenty of additional travel time.”
Special Event Clearways will be in place along sections of Vaughan Street, Rawson Street and John Street from 1am Thursday 26 December until 1pm Tuesday 31 December.
“Motorists should check signs before parking as vehicles parked in clearways will be towed and fees apply.”
Major trackwork will be carried out on a number of lines due to the bridge replacement and as part of scheduled maintenance:
- T1 North Shore, Northern & Western Line – buses will replace trains between Epping and Strathfield and between Granville and Olympic Park
- T2 Airport, Inner West & South Line – buses will replace trains between
Merrylands and Olympic Park, and trains will operate between Campbelltown and Merrylands via the T5 Cumberland Line and will extend to Richmond.
- T6 Carlingford Line – buses will replace trains between Carlingford and Clyde.
- Blue Mountains Line – trains will only operate between Bathurst, Lithgow and Blacktown with buses replacing trains between Blacktown and Central.
Trackwork will also affect passengers on the T5 Cumberland, T7 Olympic Park, and the Central Coast & Newcastle lines. “Passengers should plan ahead and allow extra travel time,” the spokesperson said.
