Roads and Maritime Services has announced the 2014 winners of its annual Construction Quality Awards.
Roads and Maritime Director Infrastructure Development Geoff Fogarty said the awards, presented at an industry event in Sydney this morning, were established in 2012 to recognise and promote excellence in road and bridge design and construction.
“The partnership between Roads and Maritime and the consulting and contracting industry is pivotal to our ability to deliver quality infrastructure to underpin safe and efficient journeys,” Mr Fogarty said.
“These awards reflect the agency’s core values of ensuring the community and our workforces are safe.”
Submissions for each of the six awards were judged on effective self-regulation, innovations in quality and end product quality.
“The joint venture team OHL–Abergeldie won an award for the upgrade of Schofields Road between Windsor Road and Tallawong Road. The 2.1 kilometre stretch of road was upgraded from two to four lanes at a value of $43 million.
“Lend Lease Engineering Pty Ltd won an award for upgrading the Great Western Highway to four lanes between Woodford and Hazelbrook to reduce congestion and improve ride quality.
“The quality innovation award went to Lend Lease for low noise diamond grinding on the Hunter Expressway. This work aims to reduce road traffic noise for the Greta community.
“Jacobs won the consultant design award for the development of cost effective solutions on the Bullaburra East upgrade of the Great Western Highway and Ferrovial Agroman Australia collected the award for environmental performance and innovation as part of the Nelson Bay Road upgrade which saw a 94 per cent reduction in carbon emissions compared to previous methods.”
Hyder Consulting, State Asphalt Services and Nelmac Pty Ltd were also highly commended at the awards for their contributions to consultant design and subcontractor work.
Mr Fogarty said it was encouraging to see such innovation and commitment to safety from industry.
“These awards were established to recognise the efforts of industry to ensuring they meet the standards required of infrastructure delivery in NSW,” Mr Fogarty said.
“The awards are part of our joint commitment with industry to ensure we are delivering safe, efficient and high quality services and infrastructure to the community and businesses of NSW.”
