Newcastle road safety upgrade planning progresses
18 November 2014
Roads and Maritime Services has finalised the concept design for the Newcastle Road safety upgrade at Lloyd Street and Morehead Street.
“The upgrade involves installing traffic lights with pedestrian crossings at the intersection of Lloyd Street and Newcastle Road and new pedestrian facilities across the Morehead Street and Newcastle Road intersection,” a Roads and Maritime spokesperson said.
“The community participated in a community information session and provided more than 50 comments which have been considered in finalising the intersection upgrade concept design.
“As a result of community feedback, right turn access out of Young Road onto Lloyd Road and the current right turn access restrictions from Newcastle Road onto Morehead Street will be maintained to reduce the potential traffic impacts on local roads.
“Right turn access from Newcastle Road into Nerong Road will also be maintained for westbound traffic.
“Roads and Maritime and council are also investigating a number of issues raised regarding local roads.
Work is scheduled to start early next year to extend the right turn bay from Newcastle Road onto Lloyd Road. The community will be notified ahead of work starting.
Further safety and traffic flow improvements detailed in the finalised design will start early next year.
“Roads and Maritime thanks the community for their involvement so far in helping to develop the best design,” a Roads and Maritime spokesperson said.
