Electronic message signs installed on Waterfall Way
17 December 2014
Two electronic message signs will be installed by Roads and Maritime Services on Waterfall Way at Bellingen and Dorrigo Mountain to improve safety for road users.
A Roads and Maritime spokesperson said one electronic sign will be installed just to the east of Bellingen for westbound motorists and a second for eastbound motorists at the bottom of Dorrigo Mountain near Thora Store.
“Roads and Maritime released a road safety review report of Waterfall Way between the Pacific Highway and Dorrigo in September,” the spokesperson said.
“The review recommended Roads and Maritime investigate opportunities to install permanent electronic vehicle activated signs to improve safety.
“The electronic sign just to the east of Bellingen will activate if an approaching vehicle is detected travelling faster than the speed limit. The speed limit and a warning message will illuminate on the sign to remind motorists to slow down.
“The electronic sign at the bottom of Dorrigo Mountain will be installed on the approach to the curve and will activate to warn motorists travelling in excess of the recommended curve advisory speed.”
Electronic signs are effective in reducing speeding without the need for enforcement such as safety cameras.
Roads and Maritime will install the signs this week, weather permitting.
