New bus lane marking unveiled for Sydney CBD

22 September 2015

CBD Transport Coordinator General Marg Prendergast and Roads and Maritime Services General Manager of Network Steven Head today unveiled new bus lane markings for the CBD that make clear where bus lanes are in operation while also delivering a better surface for buses and other vehicles.

Instead of a solid red lane, the marking will be red lines at the edge of the lane, with red boxes at all major intersections.

“The NSW Government is trialling a new lane marking across CBD bus lanes to improve visibility and provide better traction for buses in wet weather,” Ms Prendergast said.

“The new lane design will be progressively rolled out as part of major upgrade work requiring changes to existing bus lanes and bus infrastructure. Another advantage of the new design is that it uses less material, so will cost less to install and maintain.”

The new design is being introduced in the CBD, with work underway on Elizabeth and Castlereagh streets. Following the CBD trial, the new design could be used state-wide. Mr Head said Roads and Maritime Services works with industry partners and stakeholders to continuously improve road surface materials and maintenance techniques to raise safety standards across the road network.

“The line marking will be reviewed and if successful could be implemented across the remaining 130 kilometres of bus lanes on state roads as part of the ongoing maintenance program, providing significant cost savings,” he said.

“Regular testing of the new surface will be carried out including traction performance in wet weather to ensure the new design meets strict safety standards.

“Roads and Maritime will continue with its regular inspections maintenance program across the rest of the bus lane network and carry out improvements as required.”

Changes to CBD bus lanes are occurring as part of changes to city centre bus routes from Sunday 4 October. Most routes will change and customers may find a different route better serves their needs, so it’s important to plan your journey from scratch at transportnsw.info or check the changes to your favourite route at mysydney.nsw.gov.au.
