Community members are invited to collect free mulch from the Nambucca Heads to Urunga Pacific Highway upgrade.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said land clearing is being carried out as part of the $780 million Australian and NSW government funded project.
“Where possible timber materials are recycled and used along the project as mulch,” the spokesperson said.
“Roads and Maritime Services is inviting the community to collect and benefit from excess mulch produced along the highway upgrade.
“The low grade, pasteurised raw mulch will be available from 7525 Pacific Highway at Valla from 7am to 3pm on Saturday 7 and Saturday 14 November until stocks have been exhausted.
“Machinery will be on site to help load the mulch into box trailers and light trucks and community members are asked to wear enclosed shoes, long pants and long sleeved shirts.
“Heavy vehicle drivers must contact the project team before attending so appropriate access and safety arrangements can be organised.
“Major progress is being made on the 22 kilometre upgrade, which is on track to open to traffic next year.
“The new bridge over Valla Road has reached a stage where it can be used by project vehicles, reducing the number of vehicles on local roads.
"The focus of building activity is now on concrete paving and two large concrete paving machines are travelling the length of the alignment and completing an average of 400 metres of concrete each day.”
