New drug and alcohol guide announced for bus and coach industry
21 October 2015
Roads and Maritime Services and BusNSW have today released a new guide to help NSW accredited bus and coach operators to develop and implement drug and alcohol programs in the workplace.
“Developing Drug and Alcohol Programs: A guide for the NSW Bus and Coach Industry provides information to support industry in managing drug and alcohol risks,” A Roads and Maritime spokesperson said.
“Drug and alcohol use is a societal problem in Australia and we are regularly seeing changes in the use of drugs and alcohol. This requires clear management from the bus and coach sector for people in key public-facing roles such as driving passenger vehicles.
“The guide provides operators with information on how to develop a drug and alcohol policy, and how to identify the level of risk in the workplace to assess if measures such as random drug and alcohol testing are required.
“The health, safety and well-being of employees, passengers and the general public is the number one priority and it is crucial bus and coach operators are providing their employees with a proper framework to reduce drug and alcohol risks within the workplace.
“The new guide complements Roads and Maritime’s new Drug and Alcohol Handbook for Bus Operators which provides comprehensive information including sample policies and procedures for operators.
“The handbook provides information on drug and alcohol training and education for employees and managers, procedures on counselling and discipline, and practical information such as how to notify Roads and Maritime if a positive drug or alcohol test is confirmed.“
“Under the Passenger Transport Act, all bus operators in NSW are required to implement drug and alcohol programs in the workplace for all employees.
“An effective drug and alcohol program will help employees and operators understand their roles and responsibilities, which in turn will help to reduce risks and ensure the safe operation of bus services across the state.
“The new guide will particularly help smaller operators understand drug and alcohol program requirements and promote best practice across the industry.
“Roads and Maritime and BusNSW will continue to work with industry stakeholders and operators to provide assistance in implementing the guide.”
