Narellan Road upgrade closer to completion
20 FEBRUARY 2017
Stage 2 of the Narellan Road upgrade is a step closer to completion after the recent successful installation of a 31-tonne bridge girder.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said The Australian and NSW governments are funding the $114 million upgrade of Narellan Road to reduce congestion, improve safety and travel times.
“Narellan Road is a key road transport corridor servicing south western Sydney and this upgrade is necessary to ensure traffic keeps moving as the area grows,” the spokesperson said.
“New lanes are being built and the existing bridge across the Hume Motorway is being widened to create three lanes in each direction.
“The bridge girder is one of three to be installed at the Narellan Road bridge across the Hume Motorway at Campbelltown.
“Each girder weighs about 31 tonnes and is nearly 21 metres long, and was transported from the pre-cast facility at Newcastle.
“Once the final girder is in place, work will focus on building the concrete deck and safety barrier installation.
“Work started on Stage 2 in January last year and is expected to be finished by mid-2018, weather permitting.
“Roads and Maritime Services thanks the community for its patience while work is carried out.”
