Speed limit reduced on Windang Road to improve safety
5 MAY 2017
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson has announced the speed limit will be reduced on Windang Road at the end of this month to improve safety for all road users.
The spokesperson said the existing 70 km/h speed limit will be reduced to 60 km/h from north of Windang Bridge through the residential area of Windang.
The new 60 km/h speed zone will start from 220 metres north of Boundary Road to 40 metres south of Fern Street southbound, and from 80 metres north of Wattle Street to 40 metres south of Fern Street northbound.
As part of the changes the start of the 80 km/h speed zone northbound will be moved further south to start 80 metres north of Wattle Street.
“Roads and Maritime Services carried out a review of the speed zone along Windang Road as part of the Centre for Road Safety’s forward program for speed zoning,” the spokesperson said.
“The review found that a reduction in the current speed zone was appropriate due to the high crash rate, level of roadside development and the amount of pedestrian activity.
“Reducing the speed limit will provide a much safer road environment for motorists and pedestrians.
“In the five years to September 2016, there were 42 crashes on this section of Windang Road resulting in 37 casualties including eight people seriously injured.”
The new speed limit is expected to come into effect on Monday 29 May 2017.
Electronic message signs are in place to advise motorists of the new reduced speed limit.
