Community consultation report now online for proposed bus reliability improvements between Darlinghurst and Bondi
24 August 2017
A community consultation report on proposed changes to bus stops in Darlinghurst, Paddington and Bondi is now available.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the proposed improvements will be delivered as part of the NSW Government’s Bus Priority Infrastructure Program which aims to improve the reliability and efficiency of bus services while easing congestion for all road users.
“As part of the program, the NSW Government is making changes to a number of bus stops on some of Sydney’s busiest routes,” the spokesperson said.
“Bus stops will be removed or extended to reduce the number of locations buses need to stop and some stops will be moved to the departure side of traffic lights to reduce delays for buses.
“Infrastructure improvements at bus stops between Darlinghurst and Bondi include changes to bus stop signage and lengthening some bus stops to improve access for buses and assist passenger boarding and alighting.
“Bus stops near schools, aged care facilities and shopping centres have been carefully considered to ensure access to these vital services is maintained.”
The spokesperson said following feedback from the community a number of bus stops will be retained, including the bus stop on Yurong Street near Vincentian Aged Care at Darlinghurst.
“Bus stops on Yurong Street near Stanley Street at Darlinghurst and Brown Street near MacDonald Street at Paddington will be retained for customers,” the spokesperson said.
“As part of the proposed changes, some on street parking spaces will be removed to make it easier for buses to move in and out of stops.
“The proposed improvements aim to provide a more reliable bus network that is more efficient and convenient for customers.”
The spokesperson said Transport for NSW and Roads and Maritime Services invited comments on the proposed changes between March and May last year and received 144 submissions, including a number of organisations.
“The main comments received included support for improved bus reliability, safety for school children, access to hospitals and community facilities as well as access to bus services and additional walking distances, particularly for less mobile commuters,” the spokesperson said.
“After considering all feedback provided, Transport for NSW and Roads and Maritime have adjusted the proposal to extend the bus stops on both sides of Stanley Street near Crown Street at Darlinghurst and MacDonald Street near Liverpool Street at Paddington to improve access for buses.
“The bus stop on Old South Head Road near Flood Street at Bondi will be relocated to the departure side of the Flood Street intersection to reduce delays for buses travelling through the busy intersection.
“The community and stakeholders are thanked for taking the time to provide feedback.
“All comments and feedback provided by the community and stakeholders have been carefully considered and work on the improvements is expected to start later this year.”
