Applying for or renewing a General Purpose Hand Certificate.

Applying for a General Purpose Hand Certificate of Competency

To apply for a General Purpose Hand Certificate, you'll need to:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Complete a Certificate I in T & D Maritime, or superseding Maritime Training Packages (MAR13 or MAR)
  • Complete an application for a Certificate of Competency form
  • Provide proof of your identity
  • Supply two colour passport photos, named on back. If you're posting your application, the photos must be certified
  • Provide a current approved first aid certificate of at least 'Apply first aid' (HLTFA311A) or 'Provide first aid' (HLTAID003)
  • Compete the Certificate of medical fitness form (MS Word)
  • Provide a completed Eyesight Test Certificate form
  • Provide payment for the appropriate fee.

You can lodge your application:

  • By posting all required documents to

  • In person at any registry or service centre.

Renewing or converting a General Purpose Hand Certificate

To renew or convert an existing General Purpose Hand certificate or endorsement:

  • Complete an application for a Certificate of Competency- renewal form
  • Provide your General Purpose Hand certificate or endorsement, or a certified copy
  • Provide proof of your identity
  • Supply two colour passport photos, named on back. If you're posting your application, the photos must be certified
  • Provide a current approved first aid certificate of at least 'Apply first aid' (HLTFA311A) standard
  • Complete a Self-Declaration of Medical Fitness form
  • Provide payment for the appropriate fee.
