Urban Design Roads and Waterways

Transport for NSW is committed to achieving good urban design outcomes on its projects.

This means projects that projects should:

  • fit sensitively with the built, natural and community environments through which they pass, in both urban and rural locations
  • contribute to the accessibility and connectivity of communities by all modes of movement, including walking, cycling, and catching public transport
  • contribute to the overall quality of the public domain and help revitalise areas
  • they should also be safe, cost effective and sustainable and there are performance requirements that relate to these areas.

Beyond the pavement

Transport for NSW’s urban design approach for Transport for NSW projects is set down in Beyond the Pavement (PDF, 21.96 MB), winner of the 2010 Australia Award for Urban Design.

Beyond the Pavement is structured into three parts:

  • the philosophy and approach to the design of projects
  • the procedures and urban design management principles
  • the design principles illustrated by case studies.

The document includes appendices on inspirational projects from around the world, an urban design glossary and a reference for further reading about urban design.

Landscape design guideline

This document has been prepared to guide the provision of landscape and green infrastructure in our road corridors. It is published as part of the Beyond the Pavement urban design policy, procedure and design principles initiative and sets down the Transport for NSW approach to the design and management of planting and revegetation.

Bridge Aesthetics

The purpose of this guideline is to help design teams produce bridges of aesthetic value. It outlines the approach to bridge design desired byTransport for NSW and sets down physical principles of design that should be applied at the level of the whole, the parts and the detailed elements.
