Country Bridge Solutions

Our country bridges are critical infrastructure in regional communities, connecting our towns, bringing our communities together and allowing the growth of national and state economies.

The NSW Government is seeking to partner with regional councils to develop an innovative and cost effective bridge replacement system to better connect rural communities and to create regional employment opportunities.

Country Bridge Solutions - a fresh approach

Country Bridge Solutions (CBS) is being designed to fast track the replacement of ageing council-owned bridges in regional areas. Its aim is to:

  • Provide a simple and easy-to-build bridge solution developed by elite bridge and construction engineers
  • Deliver cost savings by using standardised prefabricated components
  • Use existing council resources and country manufacturing capability to replace bridges
  • Provide technical manuals to guide council staff during design and construction.

The benefits

  • Improves the connectivity of local communities
  • Creates regional employment opportunities
  • Improves social interaction and access for community and industry
  • Minimal disruption to communities during construction
  • Improves natural disaster resilience
  • Enhances and supports council workforces.

Latest update and next steps

The CBS project team has been developing the following guides:

When finalised, the full suite of guides will be available on the project website, providing a step-by-step guide for councils to build replacement bridges.

Trial bridge

Proving the concept is the next phase of the project, which will involve building a trial bridge. Building the trial bridge is a critical step in the process of finalising Country Bridge Solutions, including the set of designs, the guides and the framework to deliver bridge replacement projects.

The replacement of the Bookookoorara Creek bridge in the Tenterfield local government area has been selected for the trial bridge. Work to build this bridge started in February and is progressing well. The site is located on Mt Lindesay Road, 34 kilometres north of Tenterfield and 29 kilometres south-east of Stanthorpe. The new bridge will replace the existing crossover at Bookookoorara Creek.

Roads and Maritime is building the trial bridge in conjunction with Tenterfield Shire Council. The bridge is being jointly funded by the NSW and Federal governments and Tenterfield Shire Council. This funding arrangement relates to the trial bridge only.

You can learn more about the project and the trial bridge in this project update.
