Performance Based Standards (PBS)
Performance Based Standards (PBS) provides a regulatory framework to enable the design and development of innovative vehicle types. With PBS, the focus is on the vehicle’s behaviour on the road, rather than its physical size, appearance and weight.
PBS provides a way in which the productivity of individual freight vehicles can be optimised, while advancing road safety, traffic management, infrastructure management and environmental outcomes.
Roads and Maritime Services ’s website on PBS provides a good overview of the standards and briefly explains how a vehicle fleet is closely matched to road infrastructure to ensure optimum safety and efficiency. The website also details the application process and the PBS route map.
More detailed information on performance standards can be found on the National Transport Commissions (NTC) website. The NTC website provides comprehensive information regarding guidelines and rules, standards, design approvals and additional resources.
