Point to point transport drivers

Passenger Transport licence code

Under the Point to Point Transport (Taxis and Hire Vehicles) Act 2016 (the Act) and Point to Point Transport (Taxis and Hire Vehicles) Regulation 2017 (the Regulation), taxi and booking service providers may have a requirement for drivers to have a Passenger Transport licence code on their driver licence record. The Passenger Transport licence code will help drivers and industry demonstrate they meet their safety requirements under the new regulatory framework.

To be eligible for a Passenger Transport licence code, a customer must:

  • Hold an unrestricted NSW driver licence of a term not greater than 5 years (a person who holds a driver licence of a term greater than 5 years must be re-issued with a licence of 5 years or less)
  • Meet the medical standards for commercial vehicle drivers (as defined below) set out in Assessing Fitness to Drive.

As explained in Ausroads Assessing Fitness to Drive, there are medical standards for private and commercial vehicle drivers and are determined by the purpose for which the driver is authorised to drive (eg carrying passengers or dangerous goods) and the type of vehicle (eg heavy vehicle). Generally, the commercial vehicle driver medical standards apply to drivers of public passenger vehicles, heavy vehicles, or vehicles carrying dangerous goods.

Applications for the Passenger Transport licence code can be processed at a Service NSW centre. Currently there is no fee associated with adding the Passenger Transport licence code to a driver’s licence.
