The Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (PPIP Act) describes the responsibilities of public sector agencies in respect of the collection, retention and security, accuracy, use and disclosure of personal information.
Similarly, the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002 (HRIP Act) provides for the protection of health records and information and describes the responsibilities of these agencies in respect of health information.
Personal and health information
Personal information is any information that relates to an identifiable person, as well as information that can readily identify an individual such as name and contact details, it can also include genetic material, electronic records, video recordings and photographs.
Health information is a type of personal information that includes information about any of the following:
- The physical or mental health or a disability of an individual.
- The provision of or an individual’s express wishes about health services.
- The donation, or intended donation, of an individual’s body parts, organs or body substance.
Privacy management plan
RMS is required to have a privacy management plan in accordance with section 33 of the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998.
Preliminary discovery orders
Preliminary discovery orders have been issued against Roads and Maritime Services requiring us to release names and addresses of some of our customers in relation to various civil claims. Further information about preliminary discovery orders can be found here.
