Bridge opening times

This page outlines bridge opening times for The Spit, Swansea, Hexham, Batemans Bay and Narooma bridges.

Spit Bridge opening times

Spit Bridge is an essential transport link between Sydney’s northern beaches and the city and is used by approximately 70,000 motorists daily and approximately 60,000 bus commuters daily.

Due to the height of the bridge, boats with masts of six or more metres above water level (depending on tides) cannot pass underneath unless the bridge is open. Scheduled bridge openings are made on weekdays and weekends allowing these boats to pass through.

Swansea Bridge opening times

Weekdays

Swansea Bridge opens on the hour and a booking is required except for the weekend and public holiday times listed below.

At least one hour's notice is required for weekday bridge openings between 6am and 7pm. If the bridge is required to be opened before 6am or after 7pm then six hours notice is required.

The bridge will not be opened during peak road traffic times on weekdays at 8am and 4pm.

Weekends and public holidays

On weekends and public holidays, Swansea Bridge automatically opens at:

  • 6am
  • 7am
  • 8am
  • 4pm
  • 5pm
  • 6pm
  • 7pm

All other times require one hour's notice. If the bridge is required to be opened before 6am or after 7pm then six hours notice is required.

Opening of the bridge

Please note the following:

  • All vessel operators are to observe navigation rules when approaching the bridge
  • The vessel operator is to wait for a green light before proceeding through the bridge. NSW Maritime will be notified of any serious breaches observed
  • The vessel travelling with the direction of tidal flow has right of way for passage through the lift span. Exceptions apply, follow the Bridge Operator announcement over the Public Address System (PA) at all times.

A bridge lift can be booked for any time and day of the year except the following dates:

For weekday bridge openings between the hours of 7am–6pm a minimum of two hours notice is required. For weekends, public holidays and any time outside these hours, six hours notice is required.

A mobile phone contact number must be given at the time of booking. If you do not have a mobile phone then you need to be aware of the bridge’s contact radio channels.

Bridge contact radio channels

The Hexham Bridge contact radio channels are as follows:

  • Citizen band – channel 29
  • VHF marine band – channel 74
  • 27MHZ marine band – channel 88.

Peak road traffic hours

If at all possible please avoid bridge bookings during the following peak road traffic times:

  • Weekdays between 7am–9.30am and between 3pm–6pm
  • Sundays between 3pm–5pm

During the above peak road traffic times, delays may be experienced to account for road traffic conditions.

Opening of the bridge

Late/early arrivals

There is no permanent bridge operator on site at Hexham Bridge. Please take note of the following:

  • If you arrive early for a bridge lift without a two hour notification to the bridge operator then you must wait until the confirmed opening time
  • Be aware that there are no courtesy moorings at Hexham Bridge
  • If you expect to arrive late for the booked time, please notify the bridge operator within 30 minutes of the booked time
  • You will be required to re-book an opening observing the mandatory notification time if you have not notified the bridge operator and arrive later than 30 minutes after the booked time.
 

Narooma Bridge opening protocols

Narooma Bridge is an essential transport link for the Princess highway between Batemans Bay and Eden.

Due to the height of the bridge, boats with masts of 3.75 or more metres above water level (depending on tides) cannot pass underneath unless the bridge is open.  Bridge openings are made on weekdays and weekends allowing these boats to pass through. A two hour notice for emergencies can be given for the bridge to open and a 24 hour notice is preferred.

Batemans Bay bridge opening times

This bridge, over which the Princes Highway passes carries thousands of vehicles a day has nine fixed spans and one centre lifting span with a width of 23 metres.

The lifting span has an open vertical clearance of about 18 metres at MHWS; and with the lifting span closed the air draft through the bridge is 3.6 metres at MHWS.

The Bridge lifting span is opened to vessels twice daily at 1145 and 1420. The span is lifted regularly and on demand, an average of 1000 times annually.
