Navigation Restriction - Hunter River, Morpeth

(Marine Safety Act 1998 s.12)

Hunter River, Morpeth
4 October 2016 to Mid July 2017

Roads and Maritime Services advises that to facilitate maintenance of the Phoenix Park Road Bridge over the Hunter River at Morpeth, the waterway directly under the bridge has been temporarily restricted while maintenance activities are carried out. An alternate channel will be in place and marked by temporary port and starboard marker buoys.

Vessel operators are advised that Roads and Maritime has declared that the above works, which are to be conducted on the Hunter River between 4 October 2016 and Mid July 2017, are a SPECIAL EVENT pursuant to Section 12(2) of the Marine Safety Act 1998.

Due to the potential to affect the safety of navigation, a Special Event Area (‘the Area’) will be established on the navigable waters of the Hunter River within 100 metres of the Phoenix Park Road Bridge at Morpeth between the above dates.

Roads and Maritime advises that in relation to the Area:

  1. Persons within the vicinity of the Area must comply with any directions given by a Boating Safety Officer or Police Officer in relation to marine safety. Failure to comply with any such direction is an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.15A - Maximum Penalty $3,300.00).
  2. Vessels are required to maintain a safe distance and speed from the works and operators are reminded that the production of wash which impacts unreasonably on the works is an offence (Marine Safety Regulation 2016 – clause 11 – Maximum Penalty $5,500.00).
  3. Vessel operators failing to leave the Special Event Area when directed to do so are liable to an offence (Marine Safety Act, s.12(6) – Maximum Penalty $1,100.00)
  4. Vessel operators in the vicinity of the works must keep a proper lookout at all times.

A navigation channel will be maintained for the duration of the bridge works. The bridge span channels that are closed will be indicated by channel blocked symbols/lights displayed from the bridge. Port and starboard buoys will be in place directing traffic away from the exclusion zone and through a temporary navigation channel.
