Vessel operators are advised that a Special Event pursuant to Section 12(2) of the Marine Safety Act 1998 is to be held within Shaws Bay, East Ballina, adjacent to Pop Denison Park from 12 midday to 4:00pm on Saturday 26 August 2017 and from 8:00am to 4:00pm on Sunday 27 August 2017.

Due to the potential to affect the safety of navigation, Roads and Maritime has granted an Exclusive Use Aquatic Licence to the Rainbow Region Dragon Boat Club Inc to conduct the event, and an Exclusion Zone (‘the Zone’) will be established on the navigable waters of Shaws Bay adjacent to Pop Denison Park. The course will extend approximately 500 metres North/East and approximately 500 metres South/ West from a positon close to the centre of the Shaws Bay between the above times on the above dates. The Zone will be marked with a series of high visibility buoys with safety and monitoring craft in attendance.

Roads and Maritime advise that in relation to the Zone:

  1. Persons within the vicinity of the Zone must comply with any directions given by any Boating Safety Officer or Police Officer in relation to the Special Event or to marine safety. Failure to comply with any such direction is an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.15A - Maximum Penalty $3,300.00)
  2. No unauthorised vessels are permitted to enter the Zone and to do so may be an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.12(5) - Maximum Penalty $1,100.00)

Access to this waterway is unrestricted and via normal informal locations around the foreshore however users must navigate beyond the buoyed course area so as to not interfere with the Zone. Vessels and users navigating this area must do so at a speed not exceeding 4 knots, must produce no wash, and must comply with any direction given pursuant to (a) above.
